LI: I can explore what is underneath my feet

Yesterday, we looked at geographical ways to describe location on a world map.

Today, we are going to explore what is inside the Earth, right underneath us.

Watch this video to begin. (One word of warning, this video talks about the core. In Year 6, we split it into the inner and outer core.)

If you are able to print, the activity is a great way to visualise the Earth’s layers. If not, no worries or you may wish to create a model or drawing by yourself.

Here is some further information about each layer. There is also so much more information online that you may want to take a look at.

Your final task today is now to put these statements into four groups based on whether they describe the crust, mantle, outer core or inner core. Then mark with the document below. Tomorrow, we are going to be thinking about the consequences of having such a hot centre of the earth! I wonder if you can guess which natural disaster we will be exploring!
