We have a very exciting autumn term ahead of us as we begin our Reception journey together. This term will be full of opportunities to make new friends, develop our independence and confidence, and explore the world around us through stories, play and hands-on experiences.
We will encourage the children to become confident learners who are curious, kind and willing to have a go. Throughout the term, we will develop the children's communication, physical, personal and social skills alongside their early reading, writing and mathematical understanding.
In English, we will be enjoying lots of wonderful stories including Elmer, The Colour Monster Goes to School, The Gruffalo, Funnybones, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Tiger Who Came to Tea, Monkey Puzzle and Giraffes Can't Dance. We will begin our phonics journey by learning initial sounds, blending sounds to read simple words and practising our name writing and letter formation. We will also explore rhyming, sequencing, story maps, lists and labels.
In Maths, we will be developing our understanding of numbers to 5 through counting, matching, sorting and comparing. We will explore patterns, shapes, capacity and begin to understand how numbers can be made in different ways.
In Understanding the World, we have lots to discover! In Geography, we will travel back in time to find out what the world was like when dinosaurs roamed, exploring the different environments they lived in. In Science, we will explore our senses and the natural world around us before investigating life cycles, including the life cycle of a butterfly. In History, we will be finding out how toys have changed over time, comparing toys from the past with those we play with today.
In RE, we will explore why the word God is important to Christians and learn about the Creation Story. Later in the term, we will explore the Nativity and find out why Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus. We will also have the opportunity to visit our local church.
In Art, our topic is Marvellous Marks. We will explore colour, line, shape and different ways of making marks before creating self-portraits and our own Colour Monsters. In D&T, we will be getting creative with junk modelling, developing our cutting skills and using different materials to make our own models.
In Computing, we will be learning about following instructions and will begin to explore the idea of debugging. In Music, our unit is Me! where we will enjoy singing, dancing, listening to music and exploring instruments.
In PSHE, we will be thinking about what makes us special, developing friendships and learning about different feelings and emotions. We will explore how we can be kind, respectful and supportive towards one another.
Throughout the term, we will also have lots of opportunities to develop our physical skills and independence through indoor and outdoor activities. Our outdoor learning will include nature walks, mini-beast hunts and sensory activities, giving us plenty of opportunities to explore the natural world.
We are looking forward to a fun-filled and exciting first term in Reception and can't wait to see the children grow in confidence, independence and curiosity. We hope you are looking forward to everything we have planned too!
